Patent number: ZL 201220003769.5

  • Use only suitable octave vent tools.
  • Remove the metal octave vent insert.
  • Clean the metal casing all the way down with a cotton bud or a suitable cleaner and ensure that the hole is clean, dry and free from foreign particles.
  • It is advisable that the new inserts be screwed entirely by hand before a final gentle turn with a light tool.

It is very easy to damage the thread if improperly fitted

Inserts damaged during installation will not be replaced by the manufacture

Just before the final turn cut out a strip from a cigarette paper, 2 to 3 mm wide, place it between the insert and the metal casing and continue turning. The insert is almost at its home position when some resistance is felt by pulling away the jammed paper strip. At this stage turn the insert by a minute amount until a perfect seal is obtained.

If the cork pad on the octave key is heavily indented some sanding may be necessary. Allow the key to sit on the new insert for a short period, preferably overnight, so that a new indent will form.

John DeJarnatt - Seattle Symphony Orchestra

“I still can’t believe that I have gone through an entire Seattle winter without a single problem with my octave key. I think that Loreè should use these as standard equipment. Congratulations Joseph!

Richard Boaden - Victoria, Australia

"Your inserts have made a major change to my oboe, and immeasurably increased my enjoyment in playing it. I am very grateful"

Ernesto Lestón - Montevideo, Uruguay

"I received and installed the octave inserts, then went for six performances of the opera “Il Trovatore” (3 and half hours each) with my 11 years old Royal oboe without a single problem with my octave keys in the cold and humid winter here in Uruguay, this is amazing, the only word that comes to my mind is thanks"

Vicki Philipson - Melbourne, Australia

“Jo’s inserts completely solved the problem I was having with continual water in the octave keys of my Marigaux. It was so great not having to worry anymore and to just concentrate on playing the music”

Simon Emes - Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra

Hi Joseph, I would just like to say that since you fixed my octave box problem last September right before playing Schumann 3 Romances in Australia, I have experienced water in the second octave box only twice under orchestra conditions. Now it's the end of February 2012. After a superficial cigarette paper and NO blowing, it disappeared and never returned on both occasions. At DFP we play in a super cold air conditioned hall. ( approx 19 deg C). I am stunned and so are my colleague by the sudden turn of events. I went to Singapore recently and played Alpine Symphony to the disbelief of the other beleaguered players in the section there.

Bottom line is, it works . Spectacularly.

Try it or ruin another few of your years filled with caution and disbelief! It works.

Thank you Joe. I'm glad I trusted my instincts!
